We expect a lot of our new-build hallways. Housing everything from coats and shoes to bags and day-to-day clutter, usually without any storage space. It’s no surprise, then, that under-stairs storage has become one of the most sought-after upgrades in new-build homes. Not only does it solve a practical problem, but it does it without taking up any additional floor space.
In this guide, we will take a closer look at under-stairs storage tailored for new-build homes. Sharing design ideas, showcasing real-life examples, and explore smart tips for maximising every inch of this typically underused space.
Why Should New-Build Homes Choose Under-Stairs Storage?
Let’s start with the obvious: it provides built-in hallway storage without taking up any extra floorspace.
This often-overlooked area in new-builds is usually left empty, boxed in, or fitted with a small, impractical cupboard that ends up a black hole for forgotten items.
Whether you choose to DIY or hire a professional, you can personalise under-stairs storage to suit your lifestyle and fully customise the space to your needs.
What are the most popular under stairs storage ideas for modern homes?
If you want to add character to your new-build hallway, make the built-in storage the focal point. Panelled cabinetry, statement handles, or a bold paint colour all help to add interest and texture to the space.
Perhaps you prefer a more minimal look, and want to opt for handleless doors and colour-matching your hallway walls for a sleek, seamless finish.
Or maybe you want to use it more as a styling moment, with open shelving or a seating nook to soften the space.
Under-stairs Storage Ideas for New-Builds
There are many ways to approach under-stairs storage. What you choose will ultimately be determined by the space, budget, and how creative you want to be.

Custom Joinery
Working with a local joiner is a great choice for a truly tailored result. You can rely on them to measure the space precisely, advise on what’s realistically achievable, and collaborate with you to create a design that fits both your practical needs and interior style, whilst maximising every available inch.
Before & After: Under-Stairs Storage Transformation

This is one of the first projects we undertook in our 4-bedroom Bellway Victoria home. We originally had a half-height door under our stairs (which we used for shoe storage), but we knew it had so much hidden potential.
After plenty of research, we worked with a local joiner who brought our vision to life. They created a walk-in cupboard with a pull-out rail for coats, a larger pull-out drawer (with 2 shelves) for shoes and a shallower pull-out drawer to hide away all of our bags and accessories.

To make a feature out of the built-in, we chose tongue-and-groove panels painted in Hardwick White by Farrow & Ball, and a Matilda Goad & Co knob in cherry to add character to the hallway.
Is Under-Stairs Storage Worth it in new-build homes?
Under-stairs storage isn’t just a trend; it’s a smart solution for a common new-build challenge.
However you choose to approach it, whether that be DIY or investing in bespoke joinery, the key is maximising the space and designing a solution that works for your lifestyle.
